World Discoveries :: Wow's

We present Wow's! The example...

Since the 1960s (Ozma project, Dr. Frank Drake), there have been attempts in radio astronomy to locate artificial electromagnetic impulses of extraterrestrial origin. The project was also looking for signals that are supposedly created by alien civilisations and exhibit regularities (e.g. mathematical) that are not generated by nature. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) research was born. One of the first dedicated scientists in the field was Dr. Jerry R. Ehman from Ohio State University. He analysed computer printouts of codes characterising signals received for the SETI project at „Big Ear” radio telescope.

On 15th of August 1977, Dr. Jerry R. Ehman discovered an unusual sequence of letters and numbers ("6EQUJ5") and recognised the characteristics of an artificial signal that had to have originated somewhere beyond Earth. Either in the depths of outer space (from the directions of the Sagittarius constellation)  – or in other planetary systems. Amazed by this discovery, he wrote „Wow!“ on the computer printout. The signal went on for a further 72 seconds, after that the radio telescope in Ohio had moved out of the signal’s range due to the rotation of the Earth.

The reception of a definitely documented signal or its analysis has not been replicated since that day. However, the spontaneous „Wow!“ by Dr. Jerry R. Ehman, which resembles the  „Eureka!“ of antiquity, has come to stand for astonishing and surprising discoveries and news in science and research. The SETI Institute, Mountain View, California, intensifies and co-ordinates today’s activities in SETI research. It is an inherently interdisciplinary branch of science and thus a good example of modern research that is shaped by the explosiveness of its topic matter, international discourse and „Wows!”.

Based on this, the World Discoveries Organization focuses on „Wows!“ (i.e. news, discoveries and information), that are interdisciplinary and have their origins in all areas of research. It also creates connections between experts and people interested in Wow's.
